How to Choose High-quality Office Shirt fabric?

Go for 100% cotton

Cotton is the most popular clothing material by far and for good reasons, too. It is breathable, strong, soft and comfortable. In fact, cotton is regarded as the standard in the clothing and garments industry. Other fabrics are usually compared to cotton and they always come up short.
Office shirt shirts made from high quality 100% cotton are soft to the touch and extremely comfortable on the wearer. There are certain metrics that help define whether the fabric is going to meet these expectations.

Ply

One of the most important characteristics is ply or, in other words, how many yarns are twisted together to make a single thread. Fabrics are mostly single ply or two-ply. Two-ply means that two yarns are twisted together to make a single thread that is then woven into the fabric. Two ply fabrics are generally superior to single ply fabrics.

Thread count

The higher the thread count, the silkier and smoother the fabric usually is. Even if the same cotton is used for the fabric, the thread count makes a huge difference and results in a finer, softer, smoother and more luxurious fabric.
Thread count is expressed as a number (e.g. 50s, 70s, 120s, 180s etc.) and indicates the size of the yarns in fabric. At dress shirt retailers who pride themselves on quality, the thread count will normally start at 100-120.

How to Care for Office Shirts

Women’s Printed Long Pleat Skirt

Preparing your shirt

Prepare your office shirt for a wash by first unbuttoning all buttons, including the collar and cuffs. This is to reduce the chance of any coming off in the wash, and also allows you to turn it inside out.
At this stage, if you have any stains on your shirt like curry or antiperspirant, feel free to use your own choice of stain treatment pre-wash. Antiperspirants can stain shirts and other clothing quite badly, so we advise using deodorant where possible.
Now:
Turn your shirt inside out before putting in your machine. This is to make sure the detergent you're using will not cause damage to the outside of your shirt. Even the most delicate detergent has chemicals which can damage material, so regardless of what type you use, it's best to turn inside out.

Washing the right way

On your machine you will use either a Normal or Delicate cycle, depending on whether your shirt is made from lighter or heavier material. Make sure to follow the guidelines on your shirt label. Use this guide for an explanation of what the symbols mean on labels. This point is important for the care of your formal shirts, as incorrect temperatures as we all know can ruin clothing.
If you're still not sure, use the delicate cycle to be safe. It's also advisable to only use a lower temperature cycle in order to retain colour and avoid shrinkage.
You can also use a spin cycle if your machine permits to take excess water off, but do not tumble dry. Tumble drying shirts will shrink them and shorten their life cycle.
Remove the shirt as soon as the wash or spin cycle has ended, making sure not to leave it in too long. This can also cause the collar to start curling and colours to fade.

Drying your shirt

As we've touched on earlier, it's best not to tumble dry your office shirts which will cause shrinkage. Instead, it's best to air dry them to avoid damaging the material.
Either hang on a good fitting wooden hanger or over a clothes horse. Similarly to tumble drying, avoid any heated appliance such as a heated clothes airer as this will also cause damage.
Before your shirt is completely dry (but instead damp) it's time to iron to remove all creases.

Ironing made easy

Ironing a shirt doesn't have to be the chore we all make it out to be, but this step is the trickiest of our five-step guide.
Ironing should always be undertaken on a damp shirt, but not wet. As all our shirts at Nickson are 100% cotton, use a high iron setting to achieve the best finish. With our quick iron fabric all our shirts are twice as easy to iron compared to your typical formal shirt.
Invest in a semi-decent iron with a flat base. Cheaper models tend to have an uneven base which not only hinders ironing but can cause imperfections and small tears in material. Your ironing board should be stable and placed on an even floor.

Storing

Try to use a wooden clothes hanger which fits nicely along the lines of the shoulders. Using a hanger which is too small can mis-shape the shoulders and cause a bump which is hard to rectify.
Plastic hangers which are thick enough would be okay, but wooden hangers are preferable. This is to ensure they don't bend in storage thus preventing unnecessary damage.
Keep your shirts away from other clothing and shirts while hanging to avoid them touching (if possible). If they are too close together, this can cause them to lose shape and increases the chance of having to iron them again.
It's also advisable to keep the top button of your shirt closed as this can help shape and avoid the collar curling as well.

Three Tips to Maximize Office Shirt Life

Don't leave dirty white office shirt in the hamper for too long before washing. This can lead to premature yellowing of the collar band as any sweat and oils will have more time to set into the fabric of the shirt.

Always remove the collar stays from the collar before washing and ironing. If you don't they will become warped and cause the dress shirt collar points to curve awkwardly.

Don't count on your cleaner to find and remove stains. If you know there's a spot on your placket or sleeve, point it out so that they know to spot clean it.

Asked Questions

Q: What kind of shirt should I wear in office?

A: A button-up dress shirt is generally considered the best choice to wear in an office environment. It provides a professional and polished look. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns, and choose fabrics like cotton or blends for comfort and breathability.

Q: How many office shirts should I own?

A: A quality, wrinkle-free shirt that you don't need to iron will look good for much, much longer. That said, it is still worth having at least 10 to 15 dress shirts in your wardrobe to reduce wear and tear.

Q: What are office shirts called?

A: July 2021) A dress shirt, button shirt, button-front, button-front shirt, or button-up shirt is a garment with a collar and a full-length opening at the front, which is fastened using buttons or shirt studs.

Q: How many shirts do you need for office?

A: To give a more exact answer, most professional men will not need more than say twenty dress shirts at the most. Twenty shirts allow you to wear a different shirt to the office every weekday for almost a month without any repeats at work. Guys with 20 are probably even wearing them in style with some jeans.

Q: Why formal shirts are so expensive?

A: Fabric quantity: Shirts typically require more fabric than pants, especially if they are made with a tailored or fitted design. This means that the cost of the fabric can be higher for shirts. Labor costs: Shirts often require more labor to make than pants, especially if they have intri.

Q: Can we wear printed shirt to office?

A: Looking good at work is all about finding what's right for you and, while there are certain rules you should follow, avoiding prints isn't one of them. Prints are perfectly acceptable in the office, you just have to be careful about how you wear them.

Q: How long do formal shirts last?

A: The longevity of a dress shirt depends on factors such as the quality of the fabric, how often it is worn, and how it is laundered and stored. A high-quality dress shirt made from durable fabric and properly cared for could potentially last for 3-5 years or more with regular wear. That depends on how it is used.

Q: How long should a work shirt be?

A: Despite the fact length has a personal element to it, there's a rule of thumb to keep in mind for shirts meant to be worn tucked: the back of the dress shirt should cover your bottom almost entirely, allowing for at least 1.5'' of tucked fabric all around the waist.

Q: How should a work shirt fit?

A: A fitted shirt will feel snug, but not too tight. Your chest should "fill out" the shirt in a way where your body is discernible under the fabric. Note: If the buttons pull when you're standing still with your arms down, it's too tight.

Q: What material are office shirts made of?

A: Dress shirts are usually made from cotton because it is the most breathable, durable, and comfortable material making it the ideal dress shirt fabric. Moreover, cotton fibers are strong enough to allow for a range of weave patterned fabrics and thread counts.

Q: Which type of shirt is formal?

A: A formal shirt – otherwise known as the dress shirt – can be identified by its stiff collar, lustrous fabric, long tails and single or double cuffs. Although patterned versions are available, the most popular styles come in conservative colours such as white, blue or pink.

Q: Is black shirt office wear?

A: On Shirts: For starters, a black shirt is dressy — to a point where it's better worn for a formal dinner or party than to the office. It's also tough to prevent the ends of the collars and cuffs from looking old and frayed.

Q: Can we wear half shirt in office?

A: In some casual or creative workplaces, a well-tailored half sleeve shirt might be acceptable for business casual attire. For more formal occasions, such as business meetings or formal events, it's usually better to opt for a long sleeve shirt.

Q: What are the benefits of formal shirts?

A: They convey a polished and put-together image that can help you make a good first impression. Versatility: Formal shirts with buttons come in a range of colors, fabrics, and patterns, making them versatile and adaptable to different settings and dress codes.

Q: Can you wear untucked shirt in office?

A: As offices across the country become more casual and workplaces are ditching the suit and tie look, men are redefining the term "business casual." These days wearing an untucked shirt to work or a nicer restaurant is often considered the norm.

Q: Can I wear oversized shirt to office?

A: Oversized items can be dressed up or down effortlessly. If you're looking for a smarter combo for the office, try a fitted white tee and tailored trousers with a crisp oversized shirt.

Q: Can I wear checkered shirt for office?

A: Subtle grilles with smaller meshes and subdued colors, such as navy blue, gray or burgundy, are just perfect for a business environment. If you want to create a more everyday look, you can reach for checks with a wider weave or bolder color combinations.

Q: Can you tailor a formal shirt?

A: Yes any shirt can be tailored, even shirts that have been altered previously. Tailors can work wonders to any shirt and can alter pretty much any part of the shirt from the shoulder seams to the length.

Q: Can you wash a formal shirt?

A: We recommend a cold water wash for darker fabrics, but warm or hot water is okay for white shirts or lighter colors. To minimize shrinkage, we recommend letting your shirt air dry on a sturdy hanger. If you do use a dryer, we recommend low heat and you should remove the shirt while it is still damp.

Q: How do you store formal shirts?

A: Hanging is one of the most popular methods of storage and it works well — provided you have enough space. Many choose to fold dress shirts and store them in drawers or on shelves and this method of storage is particularly useful if you have dress shirts in various fabrics for summer and winter.
